BBC Radio 3's 'Between the Ears' series last Saturday was called "Vapourtrain", and looked at how the C19th railway helped to reshape perceptions of time and space. It features interviews with Wolfgang Schivelbusch. Might not be here for much longer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/betweentheears/

Also at Peak Rail, the original Darley Dale footbridge that is in danger of being scrapped having lain unused at the Midland Railway Trust for many years, could return to its original home. It has been estimated that the restoration of the bridge will cost in the region of 40,000. A video of how the bridge would look has been put together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SkCOR-KZj8

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

Winchester The 33-arch Hockley Viaduct escaped being blown up by the Army in the 1980s, but has struggled ever since to find a purpose in life. The structure is basically sound, but vandals have damaged the parapets (where the brickwork needs re-pointing), while the trackbed needs clearing of vegetation. Now civic chiefs are talking informally to Sustrans about using the viaduct as part of a 1.5 mile cycle trail from Bar End to Hockley roundabout, where a new park and ride facility is being built. Apart from securing the future of the viaduct, this proposal would also bring a section of the former Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway back into use. At Bar End, the DNSR goods shed survives in industrial use, while the tunnel now accommodates a road used by Winchester City's existing Park & Ride bus service. http://tinyurl.com/pezts2

West Midlands The level crossing carrying the B4157 over the busy Stour Valley line at Tipton station can be closed for 45 mins in the hour. Over Easter a tunnel was jacked in sideways under the line and should be open for road traffic in 2010. http://tinyurl.com/ps4xbw

Cotswold Line The result of passenger surveys, to be carried out from Hanborough to Pershore and on the link to Ledbury, will help mold the new timetable to be implemented once the redoubling is complete.

Oxford-Birmingham Line The former Shipton Quarry, a muddy 168-acre site on the west side of the Oxford-Birmingham line nr Woodstock (once earmarked for one of Britain's first eco-towns) is now to be used as a rail depot with warehouses and a 40-acre site for car storage/distribution.

Welsh Highland Railway A blaze which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to over 100 acres of forest was caused by a faulty ash pan. http://tinyurl.com/poal8x

Austria The start of construction of the new Brenner base tunnel came a little closer on 18th May 2009 when the final go-ahead was signed by Germany, Austria and Italy. Passenger trains will run at 155mph through the 35-mile twin-bore tunnel with opening expected in 2025. http://tinyurl.com/q8vkoj

South Africa Metrorail's new Tshwane 2nd Business Express, a non-stop service from Johannesburg to Pretoria and back, is to be launched on 1st June 2009. http://www.railwaysafrica.com/

Saudi Arabia A Consortium that has pre-qualified to bid for the Haramain high speed railway between Mecca and Medina has warned that costs will rise following the Saudi Railway's decision to have four large terminal stations, with one smaller one adjoining Jeddah airport, instead of three large stations and two smaller ones. http://tinyurl.com/qdfzl7

Angola The reconstruction works of some 250 miles of railways linking Luanda and Malanje are in the concluding phase. http://tinyurl.com/qa8blo

China China plans to expand its urban rail system nearly fourfold as it aims to ease traffic congestion and boost economic growth. By 2015, 19 cities will have new rail systems totaling about 1300 miles: http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Asia/Story/STIStory_382384.html
