Your "Happy New Year" bumper special!

In 2009 there will be two private party walks along the Monsal Trail including passage through the normally-closed tunnels from Bakewell through to Wye Dale adjacent to the former junction of the Buxton branch with the main line north of Millers Dale. The walks will take place on Saturday 11th April and Saturday 12th September, and will commence from the former Bakewell station at 10.30 prompt and terminate at Wye Dale, with stops at Hassop, between Cressbrook and Litton tunnels, for picnic lunch and at Millers Dale, terminating around 16.00. A private coach will return walkers to Bakewell. There will be a charge to cover the licence fee to the Peak District National Park Authority for the walk to proceed and for coach hire. Anyone interested should contact Stuart Smith: stuart744496 at aol.com (replace " at " with @)

News from Mike Morant...

As I want to concentrate on my extensive road transport archive for the first half of 2009 and I already have masses of railway material ready for display I decided to upload quite a chunk of those in a short period. I'm promoting these targeted sets of images only within the related groups... As a matter of interest I've amalgamated all my Longmoor images into a single set amongst which is a recently acquired and excellent shot of a Stanier 8F in WD blue livery coupled to a WD with a Stanier tender: http://gallery62603.fotopic.net/c1628963.html

The Model Railways On-Line website has been updated with several articles about fitting DCC sound decoders, including video illustrations. There are also three articles about the building of a model railway based on Littlehempston on the South Devon Railway. The latest video is a collection of film clips of the first runs with "Blackmore Vale" on the Bluebell Railway in 1976. The sound on these clips was recorded live. http://www.mrol.com.au/

Here's a neat idea for modellers... If you want any kind of brick paper, go to Scalescenes, pay your 3.99 online, and your chosen items (which include buildings and viaducts, as well as brick papers) are sent in an email and can be printed off as many times as you want (as long as you save the files on your computer, of course). You can even investigate varying the shades with your printer settings to "personalise" the colour of your brickwork. For best results you are recommended to use a colour laser printer, but if it has to be an inkjet, use Epson ink as it is more durable than HP (for example). Also, use Epson Matte Photo paper in order to stop a lot of the fading you might get on normal paper (quite reasonably priced on 7dayshop.com). http://www.scalescenes.com/scratchbuilders-yard

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup...

Eurostar Freight company EWS (English, Welsh & Scottish Railways) officially switched to using the DB Schenker brand name from 1st January 2009 and has confirmed that over 500 jobs are at risk. The German's claim that they'll buy UK's share of Eurostar is denied by British & Continental Railway as pure speculation. The acquisition, however, seems likely to go ahead and could result in the introduction of several new direct continental destinations, including Cologne, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. http://www.domain-b.com/industry/Retail/20081215_eurostar_denies.html

Iraq Iraq's railways, which came to a halt during the war, have reopened two lines in the last two months. There is now a Friday train to Samarra and a commuter train, Baghdad's first, which makes two round trips a day between the Central Baghdad Station and the District of Dora. Railway workers consider these the first signs of progress for an industry trying to recover from the looting, murders and bombings that ravaged it after the US-led invasion. In a larger sense, they also reflect the long-term impact of conflict and the struggle to get a country back on track. http://tinyurl.com/8faa4h
