Nick Wheat has alerted me to The Rushden Historical Transport Society:

The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Preservation Trust Ltd:

Wadebridge (34007) Locomotive Ltd:

This year is the centenary of John Betjeman's birth (I think this has been mentioned) and several events are planned to commemorate him, including a locomotive naming at Liverpool Street and an excursion by special train through Metro-Land. The BBC is also planning to mark the event with a weekend or evening of Betjeman films, probably on BBC4.

Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) news from their Summer Newsletter with thanks to Chris Dearden...

Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) - "100 not out" Steam Gala

The railway is to host a rare visit from one of the oldest working narrow gauge steam locomotives for its summer gala, as well as from one of the smallest. The vertical boilered 0-4-0 tank "Chaloner", built by DeWinton in 1877, and the tiny 0-4-0T "Rishra" (Baguely 2007 of 1921) will be visiting the WHR(P), courtesy of the Leighton Buzzard Railway.

For "Chaloner", the visit marks a return to former home territory, as the WHR(P) is less than thirty miles from the ironworks in Caernarfon where it was built, and even closer to the slate quarries of the Nantlle Valley where it spent its working life. To mark the historic link, "Chaloner" is booked to haul a demonstration freight train of slate crate wagons, similar to those it would have been seen with in the quarries. It's also due to haul the passenger service during the two days of the event. "Rishra" will be in steam on both days, mainly on freight duties.

The gala, called "100 Not Out!", celebrates the centenary of Hunslet 2-6-2T "Russell" (901 of 1906), the only surviving locomotive from the original Welsh Highland Railway.

Steam on the Cambrian

This summer's Cambrian Coast steam specials will be running from Machynlleth to Porthmadog on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 31st July and 28th August. The Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) will be laying on several special attractions to mark the occasion:

- Anyone travelling on the Cambrian Coast steam special can get a discount on a narrow gauge steam ride with the WHR(P).

- Historic 0-4-0VBT "Chaloner" is scheduled to be in steam to coincide with the standard gauge specials, booked to haul passenger trains on the Mondays.

- On Wednesdays and Thursdays, "Chaloner" will be in action at Gelert's Farm Works, where there'll be chance for passengers to take a "footplate experience" and see what it's like on board this unusual type of locomotive.

- As ever, the train stops at the sheds as part of the journey, and there is a chance to visit the works and see locomotives and stock on display.

An extra train will be departing Porthmadog (WHR) at 12:30, shortly after the arrival of the Cambrian Coast steam special (due at 12:00)

Extension Latest

Visiting locos "Chaloner" and "Rishra" are booked for a turn as duty works locos on the WHR(P) Traeth Mawr extension on Friday 4th August (subject to availability). Tracklaying on the WHR(P)'s extension northwards is expected to be completed by the end of July. Just fifty yards remain to be completed on the loop at the new temporary terminus, Traeth Mawr, as well as finishing the point at the far end of the loop.

The next step will be to finish ballasting on the loop, and to mechanically tamp the whole section. It is planned to do this during the annual summer Civils Week from 29th July - 6th August. A number of other jobs will still remain, most notably installing the level crossing gates, which can't be done until specifications have been drawn up by the Ffestiniog Railway (who are leading the project to restore the WHR in full). The hope is to get the extension open as soon as possible, though no date has yet been set because we can't be sure how long some jobs, including the level crossings, will take.

Andry Sollis has added a new page dedicated to the photographic talents of Mart P covering the Churnet Valley Railway Diesel Galas of 2005 and 2006, with some shots of Oakamoor and the restoration of Class 47 D1842
