SOUTH WESTERN GLIMPSES (4)

Lawrence and Melissa Hanney recently had a holiday in the South West. This is the fourth of a series on railway interest in the area...

Another boiling hot afternoon, this time at Seaton, south-east Devon. How do you cool down? Go for a ride on the top deck of the tram!

The Seaton and District Tramway is a 2ft 9in gauge line built mainly on the track of the former BR Seaton branch. It starts from the town's central car park and runs beside the river Axe to Colyton and Colyford (they can't yet afford to complete it back to BR at Seaton Junction). Brightly painted trams rattle up and down, and there are excellent views. A reputedly excellent restaurant sits at the end of the line. A cool way to end a very hot day!

NETWATCH

Referring to last week's "South Western Glimpses", Chris Osment confirms that tracks to Barnstaple Town have gone, together with the Taw Bridge. The station building was a restaurant, but Chris believes it now has some form of "community" use. The signal-box was used by the L&BR Assocation as a museum for some years, but has closed because of vandalism and theft.

Regarding the vicinity of Woody Bay station, Edmund Nuttall did not merely renovate the bridges they originally built, but they actually replaced Bridge 67 as it was missing completely - free of charge!

Richard Buckby reports that Guy Gorton has updated his Gerrards Cross pages. The tunnel collapse is resulting in some major work, including dismantling some of the building destined to become a Tesco store. Minor revisions have been made to the 'collapse' page and a new page has been added at:

If anyone has an interest in railways in France, David Moore highly commends this French web site/forum. Some of the photos are superb (or should that be superbe?) and it even provides the opportunity to improve your French if you're that way inclined, but you won't need to know a word of french to appreciate the photos:

And finally, the next Shakespearean railway quote from Ralph Rawlinson, taken from a sequence of letters to The Times from August 1989 onwards:

From Colonel HCB Rogers, Wokingham

Sir, "They have their exits and their entrances" (As You Like It)
