RAILDATE: the weekly newsletter of the Hursley Park Model Railway Society: http://www.ibmhursleyclub.org.uk/ss/hpmrs/

GEORGE PRYER

With much sadness, I learned in the week that George Pryer died last Tuesday evening. He was best known for his series on Signal Box diagrams which was slowly covering the former SR/GWR/LMS routes in the south of England, and his knowledge of signallng in the area led to several books and articles. He was one of the founders of the Signalling Record Society and had a reputation for being very approachable and helpful. He'd been ill towards the end of last year, but it was thought that he had made a good recovery. He will be sadly missed by anyone with an interest in signalling, and SR and GWR signalling in particular.

OPEN DAY

Thank you to those who have volunteered so far. I'd like to run the layout between 1300 and 1700, but it's a long stretch so more volunteers would be most welcome.

WANT TO BE AN ENGINE DRIVER?

Andrew Flanagan is a member of the Stanier Mogul (42968) Fund. SMF are constantly coming up with innovative schemes to raise money for the next 10-year overhaul. Here's the latest, maybe the temptation is too strong to resist...?

A complimentary SVR Driver Experience event (must be taken Feb/Mar 2005) comprising: - drive and/or fire 42968 between Bridgnorth - Hampton Loade & return (10 miles) - a guest who can travel on the footplate or in the full rake of coaches

A full-line SVR footplate ride

A complimentary 3-course dinner (for two) on two privately chartered SMF Dining Trains

An English-made cut crystal glass decanter and two tumblers

An English-made cut crystal glass paperweight, engraved with SMF motif

Life membership of the SMF (two newsletters per year)

Satisfaction to know that 42968 should be available for main-line running for the next 19 years !

All the above for a very modest 500!

Please contact Andrew for an application form. There are two methods of payment: - Single cheque to SMF before 15th July - 10-month standing order (55 per month) to be completed by 10th June 2005

Thanks to Nick Wheat for fiding a website dedicated to the locations used in the Ealing comedy, "The Ladykillers", shown last weekend on Channel 4:

Just to prove that stations can still look like stations ought to look, Nigel Wright took his camera to Haltwhistle:

http://www.penrith-keswick.wanadoo.co.uk/haltwhistle.htm

And later along the trackbed near Stainton where after 32 years of closure the line is still 90% intact:

http://www.penrith-keswick.wanadoo.co.uk/stainton.htm

Bowes (SD&LUR) has not been so lucky. In 2000 he took a few snaps around the station there:

http://www.ckp-railways2.freeserve.co.uk/bowes2000.htm

He went back a couple of years later and the station was a little worse. A local claimed that some people had wanted to reopen the station building but the local council prevaricated so much that in the meantime it just fell apart and had beams stolen from it.

The one hundreth anniversary of the opening of the Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway (29th June 2004):

There is a new website for the Bewdley-based Great Western (SVR) Association. There is a good deal of info on the GW stock under their care, which is the majority of GWR carriages on the SVR. Also some news reports on the current restoration projects:
