RAILDATE: the weekly newsletter of the Hursley Park Model Railway Society: http://www.ibmhursleyclub.org.uk/ss/hpmrs/

David Jenkinson, prolific author and modeller of LMS subjects, President of the LMS Society, for many years the Education and Research Officer at the National Railway Museum, and later owner of 'Backtrack', passed away on 27th April at York hospital at the age of 69.

His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, 5th May, at 2pm, in Raskelf Parish Church, and afterwards at The Black Bull in Raskelf village.

Sadly, David's death follows within a month of another loss to the ranks of noted LMS modellers, Stan Roberts, whose modelling projects were featured in magazine articles (mainly the 'Railway Modeller') over many years.

Both men will be missed.

Friends of Kidderminster Town Station:

The West Somerset Railway Association has bought 33 acres of land at Norton Fitzwarren where it is hoped to develop new facilities including engine, carriage and wagon restoration sheds, a loco turning facility, plus a possible new station serving the WSR. At the other end of the line the plc has published its Vision for Minehead Development as part of a regeneration of the station area, the major feature of which would be the installation of a turntable. For various reasons, Howard's discussion group about ready-to-run British Private Owner Wagon models has moved from Topica to Yahoo. It covers all scales and gauges, all areas of the British Isles, all manufacturers (such as Bachmann, Hornby, Dapol and their antecedents), and both limited edition and main ranges. Discussion on kit-built and scratch-built wagons is not banned, nor is wider discussion of protoype Private Owner Wagons.

Additions to Paul Bartlett's fotopic site...

I am very sad this evening, because of the death of David Jenkinson. What a wonderful example he has been encouraging young and old alike and making sure his profound knowledge was made as public as possible for posterity. I was 17 when David drew me into the HMRS family and I have a fond memory of a publications sub committee meeting at his North London home, and his explaining how important doing 20 minutes modelling at lunchtime could be - he had amazing self-discipline. My other memory of that day (in 1969 probably) was on the way home an electric hauled express heading north with a horse box - the last I ever noticed moving in traffic. If you enjoy my photographs then raise a glass to David, I doubt that without his encouragement - aided by a few like minded friends of his - I would have continued my railway interest (not easy when the alter ego was a long haired, student politician!).

Procor Bulk Salt - 18 photographs http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c165433.html Ever wondered what happened to BR Salt wagons etc. Just look at the state of these just a few years old! Ouch! Nice wagons though.

Clay open merchandise wagons, BR origin - 19 photographs http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c163789.html Clay open merchandise wagons, pre-nationalisation origin - 25 photographs

http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c163031.html Encouraged by demod discussions, quite some variety with this conversion.

BR Standard van with plywood door - 26 photographs http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c154241.html About time I did something with the good old Standard van!

Berry Wiggins tank wagons on BR - 6 photographs http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c153041.html Those early trips to Feltham - which with Ian Fyvie I organised under the name "Wagon Study Group" of the Staines Model Railway Society were important in showing to me just what variety could be found - and how old. Oh if only I had had 10 times more film available!

BR Flatrol WX - 17 photographs http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c152339.html OK despite being GWR in style I have always liked these interesting wagons.

BR Boplate as Conflat ISO for Coil - 8 photographs http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/c151690.html Unusual wagons. What I don't know is if the containers got lifted from the wagon or if they were a simple way of cradling the coil which got lifted off, as on any other coil wagon.
